Great Lakes RV Road Trip: Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota Highlights

Why the Great Lakes Are Underrated for RV Travel

The American Great Lakes shoreline — 4,500 miles of freshwater coastline — is consistently underestimated as an RV destination. Most road trip conversation focuses on the coasts or the mountain West, but the Great Lakes deliver: sand dunes that rival any beach, crystal-clear water visible to 30 feet, dense national and state forests, lighthouse-dotted headlands, and campgrounds that don't book out in February the way Yellowstone does. The crowds are manageable, the costs are lower, and the scenery is exceptional.

Michigan: The Keystone State

Michigan's two peninsulas encompass more Great Lakes coastline than any other state and represent the core of a Great Lakes RV trip. Key stops:

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (northwest Lower Peninsula): The massive sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan are genuinely dramatic — 450-foot-tall dunes dropping directly to the water. The Dune Climb at the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is unmissable. D.H. Day Campground (primitive, first-come/first-served) and Platte River Campground (reservable) are the in-park options. Book Platte River early for summer.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Upper Peninsula): Sandstone cliffs in vivid blues, greens, and oranges rising 200 feet above Lake Superior. Best seen by boat tour from Munising, MI. Hurricane River and Twelvemile Beach campgrounds provide in-park camping with direct Lake Superior shoreline access.

Mackinac Straits area: The Mackinac Bridge connects the two peninsulas; Mackinac Island (no cars, horse-drawn carriages only) is accessible by ferry from Mackinaw City. The St. Ignace area has several campgrounds. Colonial Michilimackinac is a genuinely interesting historic site.

Wisconsin: Door County and the Apostle Islands

Door County — the peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan between Green Bay and the lake — is Wisconsin's most scenic RV destination. Cherry orchards, lighthouses, and small fishing villages. Peninsula State Park has 469 campsites in a beautiful setting overlooking the bay; it books completely in summer and requires reservations 11 months in advance for peak dates.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (northwest Wisconsin, Lake Superior): 21 islands with sea caves, lighthouses, and wild camping. The mainland unit at Little Sand Bay has limited RV camping. The islands require kayak or water taxi access — not RV-friendly for overnight, but a phenomenal day-use experience from a Bayfield, WI base camp.

Minnesota: North Shore and Boundary Waters

Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior (Highway 61 from Duluth to the Canadian border) is one of the most scenic highway drives in the Midwest. State parks punctuate the route every 20–30 miles, many with campgrounds directly on the Lake Superior shore: Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Tettegouche, and Cascade River all have campgrounds within walking distance of dramatic waterfalls and lake views.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is canoe/portage territory — not accessible by RV — but paddling day trips from Grand Marais or Ely provide exposure to Minnesota's remote lake country that complements the driving route.

Timing and Practical Notes

The Great Lakes season runs late May through early October. July and August are peak summer — warm water temperatures, maximum daylight, and maximum crowds. Late May, June, and September offer better campground availability and manageable temperatures. Black flies in late May and early June are a consideration in the Upper Peninsula and northern Minnesota — pack head nets and long sleeves for dusk.
