The Gulf of Mexico shoreline runs 1,631 miles from Brownsville, Texas to the Florida Keys — and most of it is accessible by RV. Barrier islands, beach camping, warm water from March through November, and some of the most affordable campground prices anywhere on the US coast make this one of the best underrated RV routes in the country.
Segment 1: The Texas Coast (Brownsville to Houston)
Padre Island National Seashore is the crown jewel of the Texas Gulf Coast — 70 miles of undeveloped barrier island accessible by RV. The paved North Beach section allows driving and camping on the beach (permit required). South of the first 5 miles, the beach becomes deep sand requiring 4WD. The Malaquite Campground provides developed camping with restrooms; primitive beach camping is permitted along the entire open beach. This is some of the best and cheapest beach camping in the country.
South Padre Island, at the very tip of Texas, is resort-focused. Campground options are limited and pricier than Padre Island NS. More useful as a resupply point.
The stretch from Corpus Christi north to Galveston passes through Rockport (birding capital of Texas), Port Aransas (accessible by ferry, excellent for fishing), and Galveston Island State Park (beach camping, hookups available, easy access to Galveston city).
Segment 2: Louisiana and Mississippi Coast
The Louisiana coast between Lake Charles and New Orleans is industrial in places but has pockets of excellent camping. Fontainebleau State Park on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain is a beautiful campground with full hookups. The Mississippi Gulf Coast (Biloxi, Gulfport) has public beaches and private campgrounds; Davis Bayou at Gulf Islands National Seashore offers campground sites close to the water.
Segment 3: The Florida Panhandle
The Florida Panhandle has some of the best beach camping in the Southeast. Grayton Beach State Park (Santa Rosa Beach) and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park both offer RV sites within walking distance of protected Gulf beaches. The sand is white quartz — genuinely among the best beach scenery on the US coast.
Panama City Beach is heavily developed. Destin is similar. Both have private campgrounds but the public state parks are the better choice. St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach has a campground on a spit of land between the Gulf and a bay — excellent for boating, fishing, and snorkeling at the jetties.
The stretch from Pensacola east to the Apalachicola area is the best of the Panhandle for RVers. Less crowded, better state parks, and some of the most spectacular undeveloped beaches on the Gulf.
Planning the Full Route
A complete Brownsville-to-Tampa route covers roughly 2,000 miles and makes a natural 3–4 week itinerary. The logistical key is understanding that the Texas coast runs east-west, then the route turns north around the Texas-Louisiana border and then east again across the panhandle. Plan fuel and supply stops — particularly in the remote Texas stretches between Corpus Christi and Houston where services can be sparse.
Spring (February–April) and fall (September–November) offer ideal conditions along the entire route. July–August is hot and stormy; February beach weather in south Texas can be very pleasant.
